JAPAN IN CONFLICT: THE WAR AND UNRESOLVED LEGACIES

Japan In Conflict is a well-researched, easy-to-read account of what led Japan into WWII, what happened to the people during the war and how they continue to deal with the legacy. There are many questions revolving around Japan’s past militarism. How did it get started? Why were the Japanese so aggressive? Why were individuals submissive to authority? Why did the Japanese feel superior to others? Was American bombing and the atomic bombs justified? Why are the Japanese reluctant to recognize their militaristic past? What can the Japanese do to emerge from this predominantly negative war legacy?

I address these questions through research of historical sources and extensive interviews of people living in wartime Japan who were well-educated and familiar with Western culture. The interviewees for the book recall the typical attitudes of both Japanese soldiers and the government. I expand the narrative through the experiences of a non-military Japanese young man and through the entirely different experiences endured by American POWs.

There are many highlights in the book including:

  • Sinking of the Taiyo Maru as described by a survivor and the ensuing counterattack on the attacking American submarine as recounted by a crewmember.

  • Firsthand accounts of the sinking of the USS Grenadier and capture of its crew by the Japanese.

  • Firsthand accounts of the two-year long imprisonment of the Grenadier crew.

  • Extensive interviews with the granddaughter of General Tojo.

  • Detailed interviews with several thoughtful Japanese civilians who lived in Japan during the war.

  • An analysis of the lead up to atomic bombings.

  • An exploration of the war legacy and factors inhibiting recognition by the leadership.

I discuss what I call “historical drift” among some modern scholars who have raised claims that atomic bombs weren’t necessary to end the war. I make the case that the Japanese would have fought to the end if an invasion had taken place. I explain why the Japanese still have such difficulty in educating their students about the war and steps the Japanese could take to attain the greater global respect they desire. Research for the book is founded on personal interviews and published writings of many notable authors.

DIVIDED AMERICA

Living In A Divided America: Overcoming The Left-Right Struggle is a revealing analysis of the current political environment by Author Geoffrey E. Hill.  Not since the Civil War has America been divided politically as it is now. The crucial question is whether such deep divisions can be managed so the states remain the United States. The two sides, left and right can either continue their battles for control of the government or both sides could find a way to accept the divisions and find a way to co-exist. It is the latter choice that is the subject of the book.

Deep political and social differences in the United States have existed for a very long time. Slavery was at the root of most of the early differences that were found in two separate regions of the country. The need for cheap labor to support the cotton industry was at the heart of slavery.

LITTLE CHANCE OF A NEW ICE AGE

Logan Utah Climate Article 20190805 2_cl

Written by Dr. Geoffrey E. Hill 43 years ago, this article predicted the climate change scenario we're currently experiencing. In 1976 there were climate scientists who predicted the onset of a cooling period, and some went so far as to predict the onset of a new ice age.

A key point from Hill’s article 43 years ago is, “The flooding mentioned in the forecast will be due not from excessive rains, but from a partial melting of the polar ice caps.”

STORM WARNING

This fascinating article on climate change written 10 years ago is another on-target prediction by author Dr. Geoffrey E. Hill.

Author Hill wrote this article challenging a government panel claiming there was little evidence to conclude climate change would cause Pacific hurricanes to be stronger or more numerous.
